297 / 365: My Savior
This woman took a chance with me and I'll never forget her!
SMP was the Performing Arts Specialist for CCPS since 1997. July of that year, she took a chance and interviewed me for an elementary music position. This was her first interview as PA Specialist. I was a nervous wreck as I made the 8 hour drive from NY to VA. Was I wasting my time? I kept thinking that if I screwed up this interview, at least I had my old job.....
Interview? Was that an interview?
I was still in a state of shock as I left the school board building. Yes, she read my resume. Yes, she saw my credentials. Yes, she looked at all the pictures and concert programs, and yes, she asked some very thought-provoking questions.
But no, it did not seem like an interview.
SMP is one of those rare gems who could make you feel like a queen when you feel your worst. She could make you feel "at home" when your stomach was in knots. She makes you feel like "Super Teacher" when you felt like a "Super Loser". And....she makes you LAUGH!!
That's all I can clearly recall of that interview 13 years ago. We laughed so hard at times, the tears smeared my eyeliner. I remember my stomach hurting, not from nerves, but from laughing nonstop.
Needless to say, she recommended me for the position I eventually held for 10 years. While we still laughed, we also worked!! SMP expected (and got) only the best from her staff. And, speaking for myself, I didn't mind. I'd give her the world if I could.
Sadly, she moved on to bigger and better this year. Tonight we had a reception in her honor. Many of her staff came out to celebrate her numerous achievements in CCPS. I went to say "Thank You" for changing my life....and for making me laugh!!
Until next time.....laugh away!
